Will Higher Education Compromise Openness to Cybersecurity?
The fourth event in the NSWCSIN monthly lunchtime leadership series featured Manal al-Sharif, Senior Manager, EY Cybersecurity, and Derek Winter, Head of Cybersecurity, CISO, University of Sydney.
Manal is one of the founding members of Saudi Aramco’s Information Security Department, the multinational energy company, with one of the most complex and diverse ICT infrastructures supporting the world’s largest oil production. Derek is an experienced cyber security leader with a demonstrated history of delivering security transformation initiatives across higher education, government and financial services organisations.
While we all appreciate the unique nature of the higher education institutions, the environment in which they operate, and the data that they store, is what makes them prime targets for cyber attacks. Manal’s presentation explained, using real-world business cases based on the work we have done with these institutions, the factors that make securing this sector challenging, the top cyber threats and risks they face, the cyber trends, and the strategies for addressing and managing the cyber risks in this sector. The following Q&A with Derek proved to be insightful and illuminating, peppered with great examples gleaned from his many years’ experience. A fabulous, well-attended event!
